Using your design, make sure you can measure in mm in your graphics program. Lay out each piece you will cut out of the shrink film (like my example below) and print out your cutting guide. Use the equation you figured out in the test phase to find out how big your standee needs to be before it is shrunk to get the proper final size that you want. I usually cut at least 2 standees in case the first one doesn't come out right. For D&D you'll want your base to be 24mm diameter (shrank) (1 inch/5 feet in game). If you have a smaller sized character, it's okay to make a smaller base. The height of your character should be somewhere between 24mm and 60mm (shrank). The bottom of your character plate should have a rectangular shape and slightly thinner than the width of the slot on the base. Make sure you have measured the thickness of your test plastic and apply the same shrink equation from before to find the proper height for the slot. Print out your cut guide and *lightly* trace onto the shrink film with white color pencil. Cut out the shapes with scissors. Additionally, a craft knife will help with more detailed cuts, like the inevitable slot in the base (just take it slow and poke!)
All is left is to admire your shiny new trinket!
I drew all of these lovely OC's over the course of July, when we all get to enjoy the madness that is ArtFight. 2023 was a good year! When you're done checking these out don't forget to also check out the artists who created these characters!
Roll tables are incredibly useful for generating random characters with endless possibilities. They are most commonly used in tabletop RPGs to quickly generate traits, backstories, gear and anything you can imagine! I’ve adapted this idea of roll tables to help create character designs for drawing. Use these free character generators to inspire characters like a Mammoth man healing shaman, A Lithe land kraken with the ability to summon storms, or even a glowing underground cave cactus monster with the ability to control ground water. The more random it is the more creative you’ll get to be! Of course, you can always re-roll if you don’t like the result. Every month on my social media (Instagram and TikTok) I come up with prompts to help inspire artists to create original artwork not only that, but I also want to help your art get seen! Participate in the challenge and share your creations on social media with the hashtag #JuneOCChallenge, have your artwork featured and share your creations with the art community. So, grab your D20 and see what characters you roll up! 1. Cryptid CreaturesCryptids are often creatures known only from folklore or legend, such as Sasquatch, the Loch Ness Monster, or the Yeti. They are popular for their mysterious legends and deep roots in culture, making them inherently spooky entities. Using roll tables to generate characters based on cryptids can be a fun and creative way to explore these legends and bring them to life in new and exciting ways. 2. Legendary Boss BattleThe most important part of any adventure are the adversaries we find along the way. Villains often have complex motivations and backstories that make them fascinating characters. By incorporating all of the elements in this roll table, you will discover new and exciting ideas to create unique and interesting villain designs, you can incorporate into your campaign, visual novel, art practice or just for fun! 3. Digital GuardiansDo you enjoy anime and video games like Pokemon and Digimon, but you wish there were even more amazing creatures to find? This roll table is a tool that lets you generate random combinations of species, habitats, special attacks and more for your Digital Guardians. You can use these ideas as inspiration for your drawings and stories! How many different guardians can you make? 4. Enchanted Object DragonsEvery month I have decided one of these prompts is going to be all about dragons, and this month I had an interesting idea to combine them with object heads. Object heads in mainstream art are usually humanoid characters with heads as various objects usually holding some kind of symbolism to help personify the object. Think of these dragons as a container full of a magical material, and when that material spills out, it takes form into a sentient dragon, whose head is the object they emerged from! Are you ready to unleash your creativity and make some awesome characters? Roll tables are the perfect tool for generating random and unique ideas that will challenge and inspire you. You can choose from four different themes: cryptids, villains, digital guardians, or enchanted object dragons. Or you can mix and match them for even more fun! And don’t forget to share your amazing creations with the hashtag #JuneOCChallenge and see what other artists have made. Leave me a comment with a link to your artwork, and I will give you a little signal boost all through June! Grab your dice and let the adventure begin!
